Having raised $2.1 million in seed funding from prominent investors like Kleiner Perkins and Abstract Ventures, the company is introducing an API that allows developers to craft bots using simple prompts.

Jordan Dearsley's inspiration for Vapi stemmed from his experiences in San Francisco. Struggling with the unnatural feel of existing voice assistants, he aspired to develop a solution that mirrored human-like interactions. This pursuit led to the conception of Vapi, an endeavor to craft a voice platform that feels genuinely human.

To build a robust voice conversation platform, Vapi integrates various third-party APIs, including Twilio for telephony, Deepgram for transcription, and OpenAI for generating responses. However, tackling latency remains a significant hurdle, with response times ranging from 1.2 to 2 seconds. Dearsley anticipates reducing this to under a second, leveraging improvements from OpenAI and Vapi's developments.

Vapi's dependence on external APIs, while beneficial for current functionalities, poses a challenge regarding long-term defensibility, especially if larger companies enter this domain.
