Amazon Expands AI Data Center Network in South Korea
Amazon Web Services is investing $5 billion by 2031 to build new AI-focused data centers in South Korea, expanding its regional cloud footprint and aligning with the country’s plan to become Asia’s AI infrastructure hub. The new sites will support advanced analytics, gaming, and AI workloads for Korean enterprises, and add pressure to Microsoft and Google in the region’s cloud race.
This means more AI compute capacity across APAC: faster training, lower latency, and stronger local compliance. It’s another sign that the center of gravity for AI infrastructure is shifting east, with major players localizing data operations to capture the next wave of enterprise adoption.
OpenAI Targets a “Legitimate AI Researcher” by 2028
In a recent AMA, Sam Altman shared OpenAI’s goal to build a “legitimate AI researcher” by 2028, an autonomous system capable of running full research cycles on its own. By late 2026, OpenAI expects an “intern-level” assistant that can draft hypotheses and interpret experimental results, a move that reinforces the company’s focus on AI-driven scientific discovery.
If OpenAI pulls this off, enterprise R&D could change fast, from pharma to manufacturing, as early-stage experimentation becomes automated. It also opens new conversations around authorship, ethics, and regulation once AI starts contributing original research.
Microsoft and OpenAI Redefine Their $135 B Partnership
The update is that OpenAI and Microsoft have restructured their partnership, now operating under a public benefit corporation (PBC) model. Microsoft’s investment, valued at around $135 billion for a 27 percent as-converted stake, remains one of the largest equity relationships in tech.
This rebalances how AI power is shared across the ecosystem. Microsoft keeps its edge in infrastructure and deployment, but OpenAI gains independence in how it monetizes and distributes its models. I see this as a sign of AI partnerships maturing, where governance, interoperability, and choice start defining the next phase of the market.
