OpenAI’s Chip Purchase

OpenAI plans to spend $51 million to purchase neuromorphic AI chips from Rain AI, a startup backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has personally invested over $1 million in Rain AI.

Rain AI is developing a neuromorphic processing unit (NPU) that is said to offer 100 times more processing power and 10,000 times greater energy efficiency than GPUs currently used for AI training.

US’ chip independence

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes that the United States will take at least 20 years to achieve independence from relying on overseas chipmaking. He explained that Nvidia's products rely on components from all over the world, not just Taiwan where many critical elements are manufactured. So complete independence would require developing domestic supply chains for all of these various components.

Google cracked ChatGPT

Google researchers found a way to extract some of ChatGPT's training data by prompting it with certain keywords. When asked to repeat words like "poem" or "company" forever, the AI model disclosed verbatim examples from its training set, including personal information.

This raises concerns about the secrecy of ChatGPT's data and how easily adversaries could potentially access private records. The researchers were able to extract over 10,000 examples with just $200 worth of queries.
