OpenAI is investing in startups

OpenAI is launching the second iteration of its Converge startup funding program, called Converge 2. It will provide $1 million in funding and 6 weeks of coaching/resources to 10-15 early-stage AI startup founders.

Applicants do not need prior AI experience and are not required to use OpenAI's APIs. The goal is to promote diversity in AI. Applications are open now through January 26, 2024, via a simple online form.

Google’s investment in the new AI policy center

Google's philanthropic arm Google.org provided funding to launch a new Center for Civil Rights and Technology at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the largest civil rights organization in the US.

The center will focus on "advancing equity" and ensuring racial equity policies are built into AI technologies. Google's funds were part of a $20 million grant for various AI policy initiatives.

Decrypting passwords using only keyboard sounds

British researchers developed an AI model called CoAtNet that can decode sensitive data like passwords from the sounds of keyboard keystrokes with up to 95% accuracy.

Even recordings from video calls on platforms like Zoom and Skype could be decoded with over 90% accuracy. Researchers recommend using password managers to avoid manually entering passwords.
