The end of awkward pauses in AI conversations

Every AI voice assistant today has the same tell. You start talking, it pauses, waits for you to finish, then responds. Interrupt it mid-sentence and it usually breaks.

OpenAI is fixing that with GPT-Bidi-1, a bidirectional audio model built to listen and speak at the same time. Instead of freezing when a user interjects, the model absorbs interruptions and adjusts its response mid-sentence. References to it have already surfaced in both web and mobile builds, which usually means a consumer rollout isn't far off.

Once it ships, users will be able to switch between this new bidirectional mode and the existing Advanced Voice Mode, along with High, Medium, and Instant intelligence levels, depending on whether the task needs depth or speed.

This isn't happening in isolation. OpenAI is also expanding Codex with tools that control desktop apps, interact with websites, and automate workflows across browsers and operating systems.

Put both together, ChatGPT is moving from a tool you ask questions to one that holds a real conversation and then goes and does the task itself. The voice upgrade makes it feel more human. The Codex upgrade makes it actually useful beyond the conversation.
